Following the publication of the article, renowned motoring author Joel Wakely (Legends of the 18/215, A Passion for Muscle Cars, A Passion for Holden and A Passion for Utes) contacted me and told me of his extensive knowledge of the Ferrari and close friendship with David McKay.

I count Joel as a friend and I subsequently went to his home and recorded his recollections.

Joel tells me that David McKay travelled to Italy and was personally entertained by Enzo Ferrari prior to buying the LM250.

Joel was invited to be part of the Scuderia Veloce LM250s pit crew at the Tasman series rounds in Longford Tasmania and Sandown in Victoria.

He still recounts very clearly the time in Melbourne when David McKay invited him into the passenger's seat as he took the car out for a pre-race test on the Moorabbin Freeway.

A local motorcycle cop pulled them up and sought an explantion as to why a race car was on the road.

"To check the new gearing," was McKay's reply.

This seemed to satisfy the officer and he let them go.

This certainly wouldn't happen today.

At the Longford round, Spencer Martin took the car to its first ever win in Australia, defeating superstar Frank Matich in his Matich SR3.

The LM250 topped 170m/h (280km/h) on the Longford straight.

Joel has many fond memories about the Ferrari.
