ASIAL CEO Bryan de Caires said that the good news is that break and enter rates have been trending downward over the past five years thanks to people implementing a range of security measures.
To assist home and business owners in preparing for the festive season ASIAL has prepared some simple tips to improve security and avoid being targeted by burglars.
Christmas is a peak time for break and enters and theft, with opportunistic burglars tempted by homes filled with gifts and electronic equipment, or properties that are vacant while people are away on holidays.
According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) 2015-16 National Crime Victimisation Survey, 2.5 per cent of Australian households (225,700) experienced at least one break-in during the year.
The majority of these households had property stolen (75 per cent or 168,700 households), and a quarter of these were personal items.
NSW had the highest number of incidents, followed by Victoria and Western Australia. In addition, an estimated 2.1 per cent of households (185,900) experienced at least one incident of attempted break-in with the most commonly identified evidence being damage to or tampering with doors or windows (45 per cent), followed by seeing or hearing someone trying to break-in (23 per cent).
