A 10-year-old orphan boy named Pete (Oakes Fegley –  This Is Where I Leave You 2014, Children of the Moon 2013, and Fort Bliss 2014) is found in a forest having survived there after an accident took his parents.

Mr Meacham (Robert Redford) a woodcarver, delights local children with stories of a mysterious dragon that lives deep in the woods of the Pacific Northwest.

His daughter Grace (Bryce Dallas Howard), a forest ranger, believes these are just tall tales - until she meets Pete.She decides to take Pete in, and when she asks him how he survived on his own in the forest, he says he had a friendly dragon named Elliot with him.

Grace takes a picture of Elliot, that Pete has drawn, and shows it to her father, who claims that years ago, he encountered a dragon in the forest. Grace, and a young girl named Natalie (Onna Laurence), set out to discover if there is any truth to her father’s and Pete’s tall tales of a gain green dragon.
