Renee won her heat at Kempsey Shire Library on Friday 9 September, with Nimbin’s Vince Stead as runner up and Nikki Heavey winning the People’s Choice award.
Eighteen performers took part in the Kempsey heat, performing in front of a live audience where they impressed judges with original spoken word, poetry, hip hop, monologues and stories.
Last year’s Australian Poetry Slam winner, Phil Wilcox, hosted the event in Kempsey as well as a workshop with high school students from the Kempsey Adventist School. Music on the night was provided by local musician Liam Moylan.
Kempsey Shire Librarian Angie Mears said it was an inspiring event that showcased the library as the community’s hub. The National prize will be trips to literary festivals in China and Bali.
