Some of the best young surfers from Forster right up to Coffs Harbour will be taking to the waves.
Local competitors include: Jesse Hiatt from Port Macquarie; Jay Pink from Forster; Kayle Enfield from Port Macquarie; Charlize Everitt from Boomerang; and Lucy Green from Taree.
This weekend is event one of the nine-event Wahu Surfer Groms Comp series. The action will take place at beaches in the Coffs Harbour area.
Over 100 competitors are expected to compete in the two-day event, which will see some of the nations most promising young surfers competing for a range of prizes, both in and out of the water.
"As the first event in the series, we expect competitors will be eager to get their campaigns off to a flying start this weekend," said Surfing NSW CEO Luke Madden.
"Surfing NSW has hosted an array of events on the Coffs coast over the last decade and have seen firsthand how deep the talent pool is in the region. We wish the locals and everyone visiting, the best of luck in their attempt to claim top spots this weekend."
The main base for event one of the Wahu Surfer Groms Comp series is Macualeys Beach with backup locations of Park Beach, Diggers Beach, Emerald Beach and Sawtell.
All competitors are advised to ring the event hotline (0458 247 212) by 6.45am on the days of competition to confirm location and running order.
Regarded as one of the major stepping stones in the development of young Australian surfers, the nine-event Wahu Surfer Groms Comps caters for surfers from Under 8 to Under 14 and will be held in New South Wales, Queensland, Victoria, Western Australia and South Australia over summer. The Under 8 is a mixed division with parent assists
As an added bonus, the respective winners of the Under 14 boys’ and girls’ divisions from each event will receive an invite to attend an all-expenses paid, three-day Wahu Surf Camp at the Hurley SurfingAustralia High Performance Centre(HPC). For the South Australian and Victorian events, the Wahu Surf Camp prize will be awarded to the highest place U14 Boy & Girl who reside in that respective State.
Each entrant will also receive a Wahu Surfer Groms Comps t-shirt for entering, plus a Wahu beach product and there will be plenty of beach games and giveaways at each event.
The Wahu Surfer Groms Comps have helped to launch the careers of many of Australia's most promising junior surfers with more than 800 childre n set to take part in the 2016/17 event series.
Previous champions include Matt Banting, Jacob Willcox ,Luke Hynd, Eli Steele, Kai Hing, Chris Zaffis, Quinn Bruce, Ellie Jean Coffey, Macy Callaghan, Isabella Nichols, Holly Wawn and Laura Poncini.
