In 1863, defiant Mississippi farmer Newton Knight (Matthew McConaughey) serves as a medic for the Confederate Army.
Opposed to slavery, Knight would rather help the wounded than fight the Union. After his nephew dies in battle, Newt returns home to Jones County to keep his family safe. Shortly after, he is branded an outlaw deserter.
Newton is forced to flee, but finds refuge with a group of runaway slaves hiding in the swamps. Banding together with other small farmers and local slaves, he launches an uprising that leads Jones Country, Mississippi, to secede from the Confederacy creating a Free State of Jones.
Newton continued his struggle into Reconstruction, distinguishing him as an undeniable figure of defiance long beyond the war. Also stars Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Mahershala Ali and Christopher Berry.
