Two men allegedly entered the Stanley St group home just before 1pm.
The men, one armed with a screwdriver and the other with a tyre lever, confronted the 23-year-old night shift supervisor and demanded money.
He handed over a small sum of cash which was later revealed to have belonged to six residents. The supervisor was punched to the face before the two men left the home and were joined by a third man waiting outside.
Police said the employee suffered minor bruising as a result of the assault.
In an appeal to the public for information today, police have described the three men as being of Aboriginal/Torres Strait Islander appearance and wearing hooded jackets.
The incident is being investigated by officers attached to Strike Fore Swimming. They will investigate a string of robberies in the Forster area over the past months.
Officers are investigating a number of leads into the incident and inquiries are continuing.
