The listening device was installed off Main Beach in February this year. It is among eight of 20 listening stations that will be deployed off beaches on the NSW coastline from Kingscliff to Forster.
DPI have clarified this is part of an alert system only. Surf Life Saving clubs and other authorities are encouraged to download the appropriate app to keep an eye on activity and make a call based on that. The device detects sharks within a 500 metre radius.
