Kylie, who cannot reveal her surname because of sensitive circumstances, has started making personal hygiene packs to give to women on the run from abusive relationships.
“The women are often on the run so they don’t have anything when they arrive,” Kylie said.
“The first thing I ask when they arrive is what can I get for you, and they always ask for a toothbrush and toothpaste or other toiletries.
“If you have a shower it can turn your day around.”
Kylie recently held a fundraiser night at Kembali at Blueys Beach, something she wanted to do when she found out Forster did not have its own women’s shelter.
She raised about $2700 which will make 90 toiletry packs.
Kylie also hopes to make packs for children that will have pencils and colouring-in books.
“About once a week we have child protection issues,” Kylie said.
“And sometimes we get multiple cases come in at once. It’s awful, that’s why I am so passionate about it.
“A lot of victims that come in are from the Great Lakes district because there isn’t anything available at home.”
Kylie said a broad range of people came to the hospital who were escaping domestic violence, not just lower-socio economic people.
“It is vital for people to have ownership, which is what the packs are all about.”
