Although the Chambers twins, who go to Forster Public School, know that rule well, it does not stop them from pushing each other so they both reach their racing best.
This time it was Jayden’s turn to be the fastest brother on the track, reaching third place in the 11-years boys BMX State Series out of 50 competitors.
Jayden’s season highlight was a first place finish in the sixth round at Taree.
“It was such a tight race and I only came first by a foot. The kid who came second in that race also came second in the series,” Jayden said.
“It was pretty great to come third overall. Now I get to represent NSW with my friends.”
Unfortunately Jayden’s brother Harry had pneumonia for most of the year and finished ninth in the series.
Mother Mel Chambers said her boys trained together, but what made them different was they were willing to cooperate.
“It is a very individual sport,” Mel said.
“A lot of people who train together are secretive about their racing techniques because it could cost them. But the boys are always helping each other improve.
“They don’t think how if one helps another they could lose.”
Mel said because they always shared tips the better twin was always fluctuating.
“Because they train together, one may be faster than the other for a month and then they level out,” she said.
Harry said although they were not allowed to ride as a team, they were mindful of each other on the track.
He said he was happy to see Jayden do so well, but knew his time in pole position would come soon.
“It’s fun racing together,” he said.
“It doesn’t matter that we are twins on the track.”
Mel herself used to race BMX, but as her boys improved she took a step back to help with volunteering.
She said they travelled every fortnight to a race or training and her boys always pushed themselves at home.
“The boys will come home from school and say are we training today? I have to tell them no, I need a day off.”
