But today one whale decided to make itself a bit easier to spot and swam right in between the Forster Tuncurry break walls.
Marine Rescue Forster Tuncurry radio operators Mal Webber and Alan Josey said they saw the whale about 9.30am.
They then put a warning out to boats and phoned Great Lakes FM.
The local radio station put the word out and pretty soon people had packed the walls to watch the whale breach.
Mr Josey said from their radio tower they always see plenty of dolphins, but never whales.
“People tell me the last time one was spotted there was about nine years ago,” he said.
Mr Josey said they always saw whales breaching on the horizon. In one shift last year he spotted 45.
However, this year they had not spotted one until today.
Mr Josey said he recommended anyone heading out to sea to log in and out with the Marine Rescue.
“If you are overdue for return we know to come find you,” he said.
The whale swam back out to sea about 11.30am.
