Police have confirmed the learner was a 29-year-old from Tuncurry and her mother, who was supervising, is a 45-year-old also from Tuncurry.
According to Darrin Cornall from Forster's NSW Fire and Rescue, the L-plater was being instructed by her mother at the time. The brigade was called out to the scene at 4.50pm.
She failed to stop and jumped the kerb, travelling across the pedestrian walkway and crashing through a timber barrier before the car fell two-and-a-half metres onto the sand.
No pedestrians or beach goers were injured but the mother experienced chest pains and was treated by paramedics at the scene. The young driver was not injured according to Mr Cornall.
The RAV4 All Wheel Drive had a hole in the radiator and some front panel damage but was able to be driven off the beach.
Mark Tyler, who owns Forster Photos and Framing went to the beach at around 5pm to photograph the sunset but got more than he bargained for.
"Really boring sunset but some excitement on the beach. There was a fire truck, an ambulance and three police cars."
He shared his photos of the incident with the Great Lakes Advocate.
