With that popularity came a lot of work for the lifeguard service taking care of the beach. Most of the actions taken to prevent dangerous situations developing took place on that stretch of sand.
Great Lakes Council area recorded a bumper season over the summer, with more than 150,000 people enjoying the surf and sand.
There were 17 rescues by the Australian Lifeguard Service covering the council region, most at Bennetts Beach, Hawks Nest. There were also more than 250 first aid treatments.
The main focus over the summer season was prevention. More than 5000 times in the 2014-2015 season, lifeguards took actions to stop situations escalating to the point where a rescue was necessary.
Australian Lifeguard Service (ALS) was appointed across the Great Lakes and Taree council areas this season to keep beach-goers safe throughout the summer.
