After a 1.5 hour delay to the start of play on day one the toss went ahead. Winning the toss, captain Jay Withers elected to bat giving Wingham the unenviable task of bowling in the wet conditions.
The young Great Lakes team got off to a shaky start being 6/61 when Jarrod Horn joined Zac Withers at the crease and together they put on a well compiled and patient 59 run partnership before Horn was caught and bowled for a great 45 runs.
The rain came and play was stopped, with the hope of continuing on Sunday. With heavy rain over night no play was possible and the game was carried over to the following Saturday.
Resuming day two under blue skies Great Lakes were 7/127 and could only manage another 7 runs for the loss of 3 wickets. Horn 45, Zac Withers 15, Mick Adams 13 and Alan May 11 were Great Lakes’ leading run scorers. Wingham then set about chasing down the 135 runs for victory, getting off to a flyer scoring a quick 27 runs off just 5 overs.
Lincoln Blissett then took the first wicket and the Great Lakes bowlers were then able to rein in the runs as Wingham slumped to 5/59 at drinks. Blissett 2/17, Sam Whitbread 1/6, Jarrad Walton 1/11 and Jay Withers 1/13 bowled tightly making scoring difficult for the Wingham Batsmen.
Spinner Ben Whitbread was then introduced and tore apart the remaining batsmen taking 4/0 off 2.1 overs.
Alan May chipped in with 1/6 off his 2 overs. Wicket Keeper Zac Withers took 3 great catches and the whole GL team were exceptional in the field also taking some excellent catches to back up their bowlers.
With a 56 run lead Wingham sent GL back into bat with the hope of taking some quick wickets looking for a possible outright victory.
But Great Lakes had other ideas losing just 1 wicket for 104 runs, with Jarrad Walton 36 and Jay Withers 52 Not Out at the end of play. Wingham then conceded defeat.
It was a great team effort by the boys who have shown throughout the season a great attitude towards their cricket and have always walked onto the field with the intention to play good cricket and support each other and the win is a great reward for their efforts.
The Great Lakes Team, which boasts only two players over the age of 19, appeared in all three finals played throughout the season also winning the 20/20 competition and being runners up in the one day final.
While being unable to field a First Grade side in the 2014/15 MRDCA competition GLCC have set about on a rebuilding year and with the success of the Second Grade team and the recruitment of players new to the area there are high hopes for the future of cricket in the Great Lakes.
