When Brendan is asked how high can he jump, it turns out that with he can jump quite high. With his best at 1.42m high, the year 7 student competed in the annual Little Athletics Trans Tasman Challenge at Campbelltown Sports Centre in the high jump, long jump, and 100m events. Placing in the top six for each, his NSW team won the overall competition, beating teams from Auckland .
He has been selected to play in the national premier league for soccer’s under 13s, as well as the state team for Little Athletics in triple jump, long jump, and high jump.
Not one to be outdone by her little brother, his sister and year 10 student Bianca will play with the women’s premier league for soccer, as well as the national team for athletics in the triple jump, 100m, 200m, 200m hurdles, 90m hurdles, and long jump events. Soaring along 11.31m in the triple jump, Bianca says it is her best event.
“I think the competition between Bianca and Brendan is what drives them,” laughed Jacinta Mason, mother and car driver of the two busy athletes.
The Little Athletics state track and field championships will be held this weekend at Sydney Olympic Park Athletic Centre and will signal the end of the track and field season.
No doubt boosting their confidence will be the weight of medals they recently returned with from the NSW Country Championships for Athletics and the Little Athletics Regional Carnival in Tamworth. Bianca competed in six events in Tamworth, coming home with five gold and one silver and breaking several records while she was at it. Brendan competed in four events, emerging with three gold and a fourth as well as a few of his own records to round off the trip.
