At around 7.50 he was strapped into the ride known as the Devil's Dance (set up at John Wright Park in Tuncurry as part of Pinks Family Carnival) with a bar across the chest and shoulders.
Not long after the ride started the harness malfunctioned and the boy was thrown from his seat but managed to grab hold of a section of the ride. The operator noticed the boy hanging from the ride and cut the power. He tried to catch the boy but was unable to fully break his fall and he landed heavily on the ground on his back.
The boy was taken to hospital for scans and later released. He is resting at home with some bruising but no major injuries.
The ride was immediately taken out of action and an engineer and Workcover investigators were at the scene this morning trying to figure out exactly what went wrong.
