The road was closed in both directions for some time.
The accident occurred about 400m east of Lantana Crossing Road at Tinonee. It appears that a Holden Rodeo utility was travelling in an easterly direction.
As the ute went to negotiate a slight left hand curve, it has crossed the separation lines and collided head on into a commodore sedan travelling west. The holden rodeo was occupied by an 18-year-old female driver from Tinonee, whilst the commodore was occupied by the driver and a passenger in the front seat.
The 18-year-old utility driver was airlifted to John Hunter Hospital with fractures to face, wrist, ankle and pelvis. She is currently in a stable condition.
A 27-year-old female from Tinonee who was driving the commodore sedan is currently in John Hunter Hospital Intensive Care Unit suffering serious chest and head injuries.
A 16 year old Taree female who was a passenger in the commodore is in a serious but stable condition in John Hunter Hospital Intensive Care Unit, suffering serious leg, head and abdominal injuries.
This crash is being investigated by the Police Crash Investigation Unit from Newcastle.
