Police are investigating after a customer allegedly handed over a fake note to a Coolongolook service station sometime between Friday, October 25 and Tuesday, October 29.
The note, which appeared to be quite authentic, was slightly smaller in size, brighter in colour and had a smaller transparent window.
Taree police Inspector Allan Fidock said because of the quality of the note police believe more counterfeit money could be circulating the region.
"They normally don't make one or two so there would probably be more around," he said.
"Business operators should be mindful and when dealing with notes they should look at the size, feel, colour and the southern cross stars in the transparent field."
The matter is being investigated with the assistance of the business and has also been passed onto the Federal Police.
