One of my latest books received from the Pitstop Bookshop was titled 'The Immortals of Australian Motor Racing: The Local Heroes'
It is a quality hard cover coffee table book, but more importantly a must have for motor racing enthusiasts.
The author is Luke West.
His profile states: 'Luke is a lifelong motor racing tragic who has turned his passion into work. Luke from Sydney is a motor racing historian. His professional career includes eight years as the editor of Australian Muscle Car magazine'.
The book profiles in detail legends from way back in the past including Bob Jane and Allan Moffat. Working through the years, it looks at Colin Bond, Peter Brock, Dick Johnson, Jim Richards, Larry Perkins, Mark Skaife, Craig Lowndes and Jamie Whincup.
You can glean from this that only tin top drivers get a gig, and you'd be correct.
Open wheelers and sports cars are probably for another day.
As well as his top 10 Luke also gives honourable mention to another ten - Harry Firth, Norm Beechey, John Goss, Bob Morris, John Bowe, Allan Grice, Russell Ingall, Garth Tander, Mark Winterbottom and Scott McLaughlin.
Surprising me, Ian (Pete) Geoghegan doesn't get a mention. Pete was the most talented touring car driver I ever saw.
The book is 188 pages in length with some beautiful historic photos. The profile of each driver makes interesting reading.
You may not agree with Luke's assessment but you will appreciate this beautiful hard cover book.
Obtainable through the Pitstop Bookshop it would make a great Christmas gift for the motor racing enthusiast in the family. A bargain at just $29.99. Highly recommended
