Initially elected to the former Greater Taree City Council in September 2012, Cr Christensen remained on council until the merger of three councils, Great Lakes, Gloucester and Greater Taree, into MidCoast Council four years later.
During his council career, Cr Christensen has served on the MidCoast Council Sport and Recreational Reference and the Local Traffic committees.
"I've really enjoyed my time on council," Cr Christensen said.
"I know, in my heart, I'm here for the right reasons and that's why I've stood for council, all be that you're not going to please everyone, but I believe I've done the right thing for my community while I'm here.
"It's disappointing not to be able to continue but circumstances have changed and I can't continue.
"I wish this council all the best in moving forward."

Mayor David West thanked Cr Christensen for his service.
"On behalf of the community and the staff of MidCoast Council, I sincerely thank you for your significant efforts, and they have been significant, and your unquestioning commitment to the quality community outcomes," Cr West said.
"Congratulations, and you will be sadly missed in local government."
It is understood Cr Christensen did not originally intend to contest this year's local government elections.
Due to the current COVID-19 crisis and lockdowns, local government elections have been pushed back to December 4.
The elections were originally to take place in September.
Councils with mayors and deputy mayors elected by the public will hold elections for those positions in the local government elections in December.
However, as the mayor and deputy mayor of MidCoast Council are elected by councillors, those positions will be elected at council's September meeting.
