At about 11.20am, emergency services were called to Tuncurry Beach and found a man suffering critical injuries to his upper right thigh after being attacked by a 4.5m great white shark while surfing.
The 59-year-old man from Sydney's northern beaches, later identified as Mark Sanguinetti, was pulled from the water and officers from Manning Great Lakes Police District commenced CPR; however, he died at the scene.
It is the first confirmed fatal shark attack in Australian waters this year.
Manning Great Lakes Police District Commander Superintendent Chris Schilt told media outside of Forster Police Station the man tried to warn friends of the shark when the attack occurred.
"When the attack occurred the man did actually see the shark and called out to try and warn others," Supt Schilt said.
"Very heroically his friends were able to bring him back into shore after he had been attacked."
NSW Ambulance's Joshua Smyth said friends of the man worked with paramedics to revive him.
"They gave that patient the best chance that they could get at that time, but were unable to save him," Mr Smyth said.
Beaches from Black Head to One Mile were closed by MidCoast Council for at least 24 hours following advice from Surf Life Saving NSW.
Further up the coast, Old Bar Beach was closed on Sunday May 16 due to 'shark activity'.
