Now that wish is about to come to fruition after the Federal and State governments announced late last week, Friday, April 16, a $55,000 grant from the Bushfire Community Resilience and Recovery grant to fund a PCYC (Police Citizens Youth Club) outreach centre in Forster Tuncurry.

The grant will enable the organisation to run its popular Fit for Life program twice a week in the twin towns.

Member for Myall Lakes, Stephen Bromhead said the program would provide support to young people who have struggled with the impacts of drought, bushfires, the pandemic and now flooding.

"Our community has been calling out for a PCYC in Forster for years and this program is the perfect way to start their interaction with the Forster Tuncurry community," Mr Bromhead said.

"Fit for LIfe is a program with a proven track record of empowering youth from ages 10 to 17 through fitness, nutrition and social engagement; our region has already seen its benefits in Taree and I'm delighted that it will soon be delivered here in Forster Tuncurry."

Member for Lyne, David Gillespie said the Federal government was committed to getting the community back on its feet after the bushfires.

"PCYC's are terrific organisations," Dr Gillespie said.

"They're a great example of community policing at work," he said.

"We know local communities are in the best position to recognise local problems and develop local solutions.

"The strength of regional communities is dependent on young people having the opportunity to thrive, and be the best versions of themselves.

"The Bushfire Community Recovery and Resilience funding will support a range of projects and programs that are designed to help our communities continue their recovery and build resilience."

Taree PCYC manager, Justin Hayes said he was thrilled this funding would extend the reach of the PCYC into Forster Tuncurry.

"The Fit for Life program aims to improve the overall wellbeing of its participants while preventing them from falling into offending behaviours; it has already seen great results for youth in Taree and across NSW, so its expansion into Forster Tuncurry is a win for everyone," Mr Hayes said.
