After three years with West Brom, the former Aston Villa, Manchester City and Everton player, called it a day at the age of 39.
One of the most cultured midfielders of his time, the left-footed Barry played a record 653 Premier League matches, won 53 England caps, and won the league with Manchester City in 2012 and FA Cup in 2011.
Barry spent 11 seasons with Villa, where he made 365 appearances, before signing for Manchester City in 2009. He joined Everton on loan in 2013 and then permanently in 2014, before moving to West Brom in 2017.
He ended his spell with the Midlands club having helped them gain promotion back to the Premier League last season.
In a statement on Twitter, West Brom said: "An extraordinary, record-breaking career. All the best in retirement, Gareth Barry," while Villa, City and Everton also posted their own tributes.
