While many community and sporting events across the Great Lakes have been pushed back to 2021 as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, the organising committee of the Weekend of Surf Carnival are yet to make a decision on whether they'll hold the long-running event in 2020.

The committee issued a statement on Forster Surf Life Saving Club's Facebook page on Tuesday, July 28, saying they would most likely make an official call on the event's status by September 1.
Chief to their concerns is the fact the current NSW public health order stipulates that a community sporting activity must ensure that no more than 500 participants gather at the event, including competitors, spectators and event officials.

"Naturally, our event attracts many more than 500 people per day when including athletes, officials, work party and parents/spectators," the committee said.
"We are also considering changes to the event so that it can be held within the NSW Government rules."
Held at Forster Main Beach every October, the popular surf carnival attracts surf clubs and competitors from the NSW South Coast all the way up to Queensland.
2020 will be the 25th year of the carnival if the event goes ahead.
