Club president Shane Chalker spent the previous afternoon protecting his Tuncurry home from the fire, but with fun waves on offer at Nine Mile Beach, Tuncurry on Sunday morning, he said they decided to "roll with it."
"The day started really well," he said.
"It was a great day for the groms."
He said some of the club's young girls were particularly impressive, catching a bunch of good waves.
They also received some pointers off senior members Kaylah Pisani and Millie Chalker, who finished first and second respectively in the open women's.
The club also welcomed Coby Pisani to the fray, with the youngster surfing his first ever contest.
In the opens, Joel Cockeram surfed well in the early rounds but it was Adam Cheers who took out the final.
Hayden Pisani also had an impressive day, taking out the juniors and finishing fourth in the finals of both the opens and the drop-knee.
The club will hold its final round for 2019 in November, which will help decide the overall winners for the year.
Mr Chalker said in many cases the point scores often come down to the last event.
This will be followed by a club presentation in December.
