Asked what it was like to be married for such a significant amount of time, 83-year-old Maurie revealed that he was still very much enamoured with his wife.
"I was the luckiest man in the world getting her," he said.
"I've had a good woman."
He believed the secret to a long marriage was enjoying it and not making it out to be hard work.
"You've only got to pull together," he said.
Maurie is the youngest son of John and Elizabeth Witt of Tuncurry and Nola is the second daughter of Victor and Ada Kruckow of Bulahdelah.
The pair met at a dance at the Tuncurry Bowling Club.
They were married on a Saturday in 1959 at St John's Anglican Church in Bulahdelah.
The bridal party was made up of Nola's sisters Annette and Carole as bridesmaids, and Ron Witt and Tom McBride as the groomsmen.
The newlyweds spent two weeks honeymooning on the Gold Coast.
They have lived in Tuncurry all their married lives.
They have three children, Joanne Witt, Anthony Witt, and Nerida Witt-Devonshire.
