The Lakes Way has been closed between the roundabouts at Kularoo Drive/Mark Street and Breese Parade as fire crews try to contain a blaze that has jumped from the Big Island to bushland behind the Lakeside Tavern and Forty Winks.
A helicopter is water-bombing the area and RFS crews are trying to contain the fire at different points along the Lakes Way.
Smoke and ash are thick through the area and police are redirecting traffic.
Stocklands chose to temporarily close its shopping centre due to an influx of smoke.
RFS district officer Stuart Robb advised there was still no threat to properties.

EARLIER
The bushfire on Big Island, Forster has spotted over Peppers Creek and is now burning behind the Lakeside Tavern on The Lakes Way.
Rural Fire Service NSW and Fire and Rescue crews along with a water-bombing helicopter are on the scene working to extinguish the fire.
The Lakes Way remains open, however RFS district officer, Stuart Robb assures advises motorists to take care and drive to the smoky conditions.
He said there was no threat to properties.
