Whether you’re a history buff or not, August is a great time to explore your ancestry as the team at MidCoast Libraries plays host to a series of workshops that celebrate National Family History Month.
Piecing together your family tree is a great way to honour those who’ve come before you, and preserve their stories for your future generations.
As part of National Family History Month 2018, MidCoast Libraries will partner with Manning Wallamba Family History Society to assist you in understanding how to go about researching your family’s past.
The workshops will arm you with the tools and resources to find about how your family members came to settle in Australia and where they originated from.
You’ll be equipped to uncover stories of the heroes, inventors, matriarchs and black sheep who are part of your family’s history.
And best of all, after attending the workshops you’ll have the ongoing support of volunteers from the Manning Wallamba Family History Society to continue your quest.
Workshops will take place from August 1-13 at Taree, Harrington, Hallidays Point and Harrington libraries, covering topics that include searching properties across NSW, exploring your convict past, and DNA and your family.
“National Family History Month is a terrific platform to encourage locals to start thinking about their family history,” MidCoast Council libraries manager, Chris Jones said.
“Through our valuable partnership with Manning Wallamba Family History Society, we’ve seen so many families expand and reconnect with relatives they never knew existed; it’s a great way to bring people together,” he said.
The full schedule of workshops can be found on the MidCoast Libraries website www.midcoastlibraries.com.au/events
In addition to the workshops, volunteers from the Manning Wallamba Family History Society are on hand Monday through to Saturday each week at Taree library from 10am-1pm.
Locals interested in documenting and sharing their family stories in the Mid Coast region can also keep an eye out for the launch of the MidCoast Stories website in September.
