I feel that I must clear up some facts regarding Mayor West’s recent statement, quoted in the Manning River Times, online May 31 where it says: “Cr West said for far too long our communities suffered as individual councils were unable to maintain our local roads. “But today as one council that all changes.”

I would like to remind Cr West that the former Great Lakes Council was, prior to the amalgamation, found to be “Fit for the Future”, where as both Greater Taree and Gloucester councils were found to be “Not Fit for the Future”.
That is reflected in the previous condition of roads across the three former council areas. I also note that most of the money is to be spent in the former Greater Taree and Gloucester council areas, which further indicates which council had better managed maintenance of their roads.
