In a battle for state supremacy, the Red Cross Blood Service has teamed up with the National Rugby League (NRL) to encourage locals to donate blood.
The ‘Out for Blood’ campaign allows donors to nominate their team of choice for the upcoming State of Origin series, NSW or Queensland, and go head-to-head to save lives.
Pledges at blood service units will be measured in both states ahead of and during the State of Origin series.
Community relations officer Stuart Ward encouraged Manning, Great Lakes and Gloucester residents to show their support and said the long standing rivalry between the states has been taken to a new level, all in the name of blood donations.
“State of Origin fever is sweeping across Queensland and NSW once again and footy fans are being urged to tackle a blood donation.
“The Red Cross Blood Service is calling on people to donate blood, with both states going head-to-head off the field in the ‘Out for Blood’ challenge.
“We are hoping to see a win for NSW on and off the field,” Mr Ward said.
He added that by donating blood, rugby league fans can show loyalty for their team and also save lives.
“One in three people will need blood in their lifetime, but only one in 30 donate,” Mr Ward said.
“Blood is needed.”

Supporters who donate will also receive special Blues and Maroons branded bandaging and merchandise when they donate.
