I wish to challenge the accuracy of the views offered by Mid Coast Council community spaces recreation and trades manager in the article headed "How safe is Tuncurry Rock Pool" (Great Lakes Advocate, April 4).
I can assure readers that the shark proof netting was most probably provided in 1970.
The pool was a by-product of new rock walling constructed about 1968 I believe to narrow the outlet channel and thus speed up the flow of water to keep sand suspended rather than accrete on the northern side and thus block the channel as before.
Apparently people used the pool thus caused and council took the step to provide the protective netting.
The original netting, though costly, had greater protection than the later revision which by the photo in the article shows a lack of protection at the ends for a considerable length.
I have a photo taken by me and stamped on the back February 1975 which shows the shark netting in place.
