Memorable for its title alone, this film stars mostly unknowns and could be dismissed as a chick flick. But The Guernsey Literary & Potato Peel Pie Society has a little more depth than may at first seem. Juliet Ashton (Lily James) is a best selling British author of shallow wartime vignettes who finds, once the war is over, she longs for something to tap creatively into her underlying emotions. When she receives a letter from a member of a mysterious literary club in former Nazi-occupied Guernsey, her curiosity is piqued. The club members share their war-time experiences, and an idea for a book prompts Juliet to visit the island. She meets the eccentric club members, including Dawsey (Michiel Huisman of Game of Thrones fame), the rugged pig farmer who wrote to her, and as their wartime secrets unfold, Juliet's growing attachment to the island, the book club and Dawsey change the course of her life forever.
