The Westpac Rescue Helicopter airlifted an 89-year-old woman with an arm injury and a 57-year-old woman with spinal and arm injuries, while a third person was transported by ambulance to Newcastle.
The patients were in a stable condition.
Despite an extensive media blitz by NSW police, more than 1000 people a day continue to be caught travelling above the speed limit on the State’s roads during the Christmas-New Year break.
Operation Safe Arrival, the Christmas and New Year road safety campaign, started at 12.01am on Friday, December 15 and will continue until 11.59pm this evening, Monday, January.
Twenty-five lives have now been lost on NSW roads since the start of the campaign.
This follows the death in hospital of a 91-year-old woman.
The woman was injured during a crash at St Remo on Christmas Day.
Traffic & Highway Patrol Command commander, Assistant Commissioner Michael Corboy said that on average, 1100 people per day were detected travelling over the speed limit on NSW roads during Christmas and New Year holiday period
“You also have to remember that double demerits have applied for much of this period,” he said.
“In spite of the extensive publicity regarding road safety and road policing during this time, I am mystified as to why the public would choose to continue speeding on our roads.
“The public should be particularly concerned, that in some cases speeding has been combined with alcohol.”
