In the heat, Brazil’s Roberto Bruno finished just 0.27 ahead of Joshua.
Joshua managed to hold off bodyboarding icon Mike Stewart by one point.
"Surfing against Mike Stewart was great fun, just wish I had been able to get a victory against Roberto Bruno, who has bested me three times in a row this year.
"I went into my sudden death heat with a plan to keep busy as the waves had become less consistent than earlier.
“This paid off, as one of my scoring rides was taken under priority.
"There were still some solid waves in the six to eight foot range throughout the day, and plenty of great riding, particularly from Ryan Hardy,” Joshua said.
Competition is set to resume next week, with organisers predicting cleaner swell midweek to finish the event.
Joshua is guaranteed a top 13 position in this event if he is unable to beat 2015 world champion Jared Houston in his round three heat.
His main goal this year was to finish in the top 24 and if he beats Houston and progresses to the quarter finals, it will be achieved.
