Jed McDonagh recently gained his Surf Rescue Certificate in the Koori SRC Course held in conjunction with Great Lakes College, Forster Campus, and competed in the Under 14 Division. Another Forster High School student McKenzie Harris competed in the Under 15 Division.
The event was held in small and choppy conditions at Soldiers Beach on the Central Coast, which proved difficult for the surfers. Only his first competition, McKenzie was unfortunately unable to progress through to the semi finals but came away with new skills and experience.
Jed won his heat and progressed to the finals held on Saturday afternoon. Up against promising young competitor Finn Askew from South West Rocks, Jed held his own and came away with a second placing. Jed has been competing for only a short time and until now has not been able to break through to the placings but it is hoped this may be a turning point in his board riding career.
Forster Surf Life Saving Club expressed pride in both boys and hope that next year a few more members may compete.
Best of luck to club member Laura Thurtell who will compete at the World Life Saving Championships in The Netherlands in early September.
