There is nothing like time spent with good friends, the reassurance of companionship and the support of a caring local community.
The Forster Tuncurry region is brimming with friendly retirees, keen to establish new friendships and enjoy time with like-minded people and groups.
A number of local organisations and purpose-built retirement living facilities offer activities, amenities and special interest groups specifically for retirees.
Whether the groups are privately run or Council-led, they cover a myriad of interests and activity levels, and are accessible to a wide cross-section of the community. Some are free of charge.
Evermore Retirement Living at Forster offers exercise and activities designed to suit their residents’ differing fitness levels and to keep everyone young at heart.
Participants can be as active or relaxed as they like; each decides how they would prefer to keep their mind and body active with activities including:
- card or board games like bridge, chess, drafts, dominoes or Monopoly
- art classes and quilt-making workshops
- regular craft groups
- trips to the Men’s Shed for some tinkering, handicrafts, modelling … or just a quiet moment to yourself
- non-strenuous gardening
- a game of bingo or two
- exercise at Evermore's gym or a swim in the pool
- afternoon movies in the onsite theatre
- leisurely walks, and
- fishing in the local estuary, just 200 metres away.
Evermore’s active social committee welcomes new ideas and encourages residents to have a say on what activities are available.
Likewise the Mid Coast Council’s Ageing and Disability Services team provides older people with support services, programs, useful information and improved access to the community.
If you need access to support, social groups or assistance with transport, we can help.
- Mid Coast Council's Ageing and Disability Services team
All recognise that older people can often experience feelings of loneliness, isolation or boredom.
The team also places great importance on creating activities and environments that are full of fun and friendship.
No matter what your situation or location, they have something to suit you.
Outings usually include a meal, and the types of outings and social groups on offer include cooking classes, gentle exercise, fishing trips, art classes and trips to the cinema, shopping or places of interest.
Centre-based activities also take place in Forster (Breese Parade, next to the library), and at Hawks Nest Community Hall.
If you or someone you know would like more information on the support services and activities on offer via the Mid Coast Council Ageing and Disability team call 1300 65 88 30 or go to the Mid Coast Council website.
