The annual tour celebrates the heroes and stories intrinsically linked to the Melbourne Cup and its contribution to Australia’s historical and cultural heritage before returning to Flemington Racecourse for the ‘race that stops a nation on the first Tuesday in November.
Since the tour began in 2003 it has travelled more than 456,000 kilometres engaging tens of thousands of people.
In 2016 the $175,000 trophy will tour 34 destinations across Australia and New Zealand in an effort to unite communities by engaging schools, councils, hospitals, aged-care facilities and racing clubs in events to raise funds for local causes.
101.5 Great Lakes FM and Tuncurry-Forster Jockey Club united in a bid to host this event in Forster-Tuncurry and are excited to officially announce that their bid was successful.
This is a unique opportunity for this “icon” of Australian and world sport to visit and showcase our area and raise funds for local charity, Riding For The Disabled.
The tour starts with an official welcome for Emirates Melbourne Cup Tour delegates at the Tuncurry Beach Bowling Club this Friday at 7:30pm followed by a program of events starting from 8:30am at the 101.5 Great Lakes FM studios in Tuncurry on Saturday where the Cup will then be on public display while on parade from Tuncurry to Forster.
The stops include iconic Tuncurry and Forster locations where promotional photos of the Cup will be used during the rest of its 2016 tour to New Zealand and other Australian states.
Local businesses will have the opportunity to “don a racing theme” to welcome the Cup delegation and individuals will have the opportunity during the tour to be photographed with the Cup to help raise funds for our designated charity.
The Emirates Melbourne Cup Tour includes a morning tea at Evermore Retirement Living and other venues to be confirmed before returning to the Tuncurry Racecourse to coincide with the annual Tuncurry-Forster Jockey Clubs annual Ladies Race Day.
In the lead up to the event Forster and Tuncurry will be decorated to welcome the Emirates Melbourne Cup delegation with flags, posters and programs for the event will be distributed over the coming weeks.
101.5 Great Lakes FM will be providing exclusive radio coverage of the event as part of their 30th Anniversary celebrations including interviews with key stakeholders, program details, listener giveaways and live crosses on the day.
