“We received the call to a fire that was threatening units in Taree Street at 1.40pm on Saturday,” Forster Fire and Rescue Captain Paul Langley confirmed.
“The fire was in the eastern end of the reserve and it was mostly in the top of the tall cabbage palms. The flames were basically licking the top of the unit block.”
Both Forster Fire and Rescue units and four Rural Fire Service Units responded to the fire which was difficult to contain.
“The nature of the fire and the way it was mostly up high in the top of the cabbage palms made it difficult to extinguish. We also had a re-ignition issue that we contained eventually.”
Charlotte Ohma Reserve was the scene of another fire on August 29 with both believed to be deliberately lit. Mr Langley reported that police had a strong lead on a suspect in Saturday’s fire.
“We believe police, who also attended the fire, have a strong lead on a possible suspect and are pursuing that.”
