The fire took hold in Tuncurry's Gary's Radio Control Hobby Centre late on Friday afternoon.
Business-owner Gary Sheehy told the Great Lakes Advocate that he had stepped away from a job, and when he came back a fire had broken out.
"I went to the toilet and when I came back the place was alight," he said.
"I was charging up a brand new Lipo battery in preparation for this weekend's Forster Keys family fun weekend."
The fire is said to have been ignited by a battery that was being charged.
Emergency services managed to contain the blaze to the one Bridgepoint Building shop.
Traffic was diverted around the area as crews worked to extinguish the fire.
No one was hurt in the fire and there does not appear to be any damage to any other shops located within the building.
