Panic set in for parents on Facebook as early reports filtered in online about gun shots heard at Wangaratta High School about 3pm.
The bogus reports were soon quashed as parents turned up to the school to collect their children.
The school was in lock down for a short time as police arrived and arrested the boy, 15, who was taken to the police station.
Police were last night taking his statement and expected to charge him with assault.
The teacher who was assaulted did not sustain any injuries, while the two students in the boy’s class received minor injuries.
One Facebook user wrote: “Anybody know anything about a shooting at the Wang High School. Apparently about 3.20pm today?”
“My poor son (year 8) came home and burst into tears.”
The comment received 18 replies within half an hour, with some parents saying they were on their way to the school.
Another Facebook user wrote: “My grandson just said the school was in lock down and police were there.”
The principal was not available for comment last night.
