Close to 1300 competitors battled it out over two days at Boronia Park with pool matches held throughout Saturday with a knock-out competition leading to the final match between the top teams on Sunday.
Local side Chipperfield beat Sydney team Tiger Gold 2-1 in the men’s A Division final to claim the win on Sunday afternoon.
The match was played at high intensity with solid tackling that drew plenty of attention from officials.
While the Tigers started strongly, Chipperfield gradually worked their way back into the match, shocking the Tigers with an early goal.
With only one substitute, the Tigers began to struggle. The match continued as end to end football with Chipperfield beginning to dominate. By this stage, the score was 2-1 to the locals and the Tigers where chasing the game. The extra substitutes and good possession by Chipperfield eventually wore the Tigers down and when the final whistle blew, the local side had taken out the title.
Two other local teams fared well with the Brothers side winning the men’s B Division and Perry’s Girls taking the runner’s up spot in the Women’s A Division.
Two goals early on by TBA made it a challenging task for Perry’s to make their mark. The local side continued to put pressure on their opponents but as the game went on the momentum had shifted too far in the direction of TBA. The visitors took out the match 6-0.
Viking Challenge co-ordinator Paul Sandilands said it had been the biggest year in the event’s history with 129 teams playing more than 350 matches on Saturday and Sunday.
“We had some strong performances from all of our local sides. What it tells you is that standard of football is improving in this area,” Mr Sandilands said.
“The weekend was great; we had beautiful weather over the two days. We had nearly 1300 competitors out of the 129 teams which is quite significant when you think about it.”
The event’s special guest was former Socceroo John Kosmina who conducted the draw for the A Division for both the men’s and women’s.
Over the course of the weekend, only three red cards where shown which reflected well on competitors, Mr Sandilands said.
Organisers would like to thank the referees, the Pink Ladies, members from the Green Point Club, Gary McQuillan and the Jockey Club as well as Great Lakes United Football Club committee and volunteers for a successful event.
