Australia has won three gold medals on the second night of swimming at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games with one final to go.
Leiston Pickett won Australia's first gold in the 50 metre breaststroke. The London Olympian was the second quickest qualifier for the final and was behind Jamaica's Alia Atkinson for much of the lap before edging ahead in the final metres to win in 30.59 seconds. Atkinson touched in 30.67 with Lorna Tonks, a 25-year-old Brit who is a naturalised Australian, finishing in seventh in 31.99.
Thomas Fraser-Holmes followed Pickett's win with a thrilling victory in the 200m freestyle final.
Fraser-Holmes trailed teammate and national champion Cameron McEvoy for 150 metres but overhauled him over the final 25 metres to win in one minute 45.08. McEvoy touched in 1:45.56, while 400m freestyle silver medallist David McKeon continued his impressive rise with a fourth place in 1:46.74.
McEvoy, who had an impressive national titles this year where he won the 100m and 200m freestyle double, will have another chance at gold when he takes his place in the 4x100m freestyle relay in the last race of the session.
Fraser-Holmes backed up to win a silver medal in the 400m individual medley.
Para-swimmer Maddison Elliott has broken world record in winning the women's 100 metre freestyle (S8) final.
The 15 year old Elliott, who became Australia's youngest ever Paralympic gold medallist at the London Games, had earmarked the world standard and had narrowly missed her target in the morning heat.
However, she made no mistake in the final, winning in one minute 05.32 seconds, slicing 0.31 off Jessica Long's mark of 1:05.63.
Lakeisha Patterson, who was a late replacement for Jacqui Freney, won the bronze in 1:08.98.
Australia has now won six gold medals in the pool, after the women's 4x100m freestyle relay, Emma McKeon in the 200m freestyle and Rowan Crothers in the para-swimming 100m freestyle (S9) won on the first night of competition.
