CURTIS Landers was moved to the Westmead Children’s Hospital yesterday to undergo physical rehabilitation.
Since his accident, Curtis has remained at Sydney’s Royal North Shore Hospital at St Leonards but was moved to the children’s hospital yesterday.
Forster Tuncurry Hawks coaching mentor Warren Blissett told the Advocate yesterday that Curtis is now sitting up and is commencing rehab.
“He’s started to have physical rehabilitation which is another positive and he’s sitting upright,” Mr Blissett said.
“He’s being relocated to Westmead hospital today (yesterday) where he will undergo more rehabilitation.”
INJURED Forster Tuncurry Hawks player Curtis Landers met with inspirational Newcastle Knight Alex McKinnon in a Sydney hospital this week.
The two young rugby league players have a lot in common and on Tuesday they met for the first time in the spinal ward of the Royal North Shore Hospital.
Both young men had their careers cut tragically short and both are recovering from serious neck fractures.
Curtis broke his neck after a tackle in a game against the Port City Breakers in Port Macquarie on May 24 while 22-year-old Alex from Aberdeen suffered a spinal injury during a game against the Melbourne Storm in March.
A post on the Curtis Landers Road to Recovery Facebook page said Alex had been an inspiration for the 15-year-old.
"Curt had the great honour of meeting Alex McKinnon today," the post said.
"He was a great guy and such an inspiration, with a lovely family.
"Curt’s eating more and more and there was a slight movement in his legs today."
The meeting was arranged by their fathers Ned Landers and Scott McKinnon who have bonded in recent days.
“I think it was really good for Curtis and his dad to have met Alex (McKinnon) and his dad Scott,” Forster Tuncurry Hawks junior coaching mentor Warren Blissett said.
“They obviously have stories to share about rehab and hospital care and the therapy that’s involved. They have a great deal of knowledge for Curtis and his journey ahead.”
Mr Blissett said Curtis’ team - the under 15s Forster Tuncurry Hawks were also invited by the Newcastle Knights to attend their match against the West Tigers on Sunday at Hunter Stadium.
The local club also had the opportunity to meet with Knights’ players after the game.
