There have been clean plates all round since Jake Lang became the new chef at Sunrise Village.

"Since Jake joined, our residents having meals has increased by 50 per cent," said Sunrise's Bella Said.

Jake's journey with Sunrise all began after chatting with a local fishing pal, who tipped him off about the job at the village. Jake got in touch with director Paul Greenup and has been working at Sunrise since September 2020.

Jake may be a familiar face to many; he was raised in Forster and returned to the area six years ago after working in Brisbane's restaurant business.

Jake started his training to become a chef at school, and he has had a passion for cooking ever since.

Jake says what he loves most about working at Sunrise is getting to chat with the residents.

"I get a lot of honest feedback, and I have a lot more personal rapport than I would do working in a typical restaurant. Residents can suggest what they like, and I will do my best to accommodate them.

"There is always something new on the menu, and I love perfecting new dishes," says Jake.

The menu is tailored specifically to meet the needs of Sunrise residents.

"It's all about comfort food, and it is simple food, done well," says Jake. "I use the best possible ingredients and always try to use local produce.

"I enjoy searching the area for local products.

"When I started at Sunrise, I made a promise to the residents that nothing would be frozen, except for the ice cream; so everything is freshly prepared."

Meals are provided seven days a week for lunch an dinner if you choose too however all units are fully equipped with full kitchens should you prefer to cook your own meals.

It's not just the food that makes Sunrise so special.

Sunrise Village is about supported living and is a relatively new concept in seniors' living in Australia. It combines all the best points of retirement village living with the best attributes of a traditional Aged Care facility.

At Sunrise, seniors are as independent as they possibly can be while having all the care and support on site if they need it. This makes Sunrise truly unique.
