This follows the NSW Government's decision to allow up to 3000 people to take part in outdoor community sports events around the State from Monday, December 7.
Forster parkrun race director Christine Woodhouse said discussions were currently taking place with MidCoast Council about the return of the Forster, Taree and Gloucester parkruns.
"We're all excited that it's going to go ahead again but we've got to make sure we've got all our ticks in place," Ms Woodhouse said.
"We've got to reapply to council and show them that we've got COVID guidelines in place."
Ms Woodhouse said it was too soon to say whether the Forster event would return before the new year.
"We'd love to be able to but it's just a matter of timing," she said.
"I can't really say yes or no until I find out."

Ms Woodhouse said for this reason she couldn't comment on the prospect of a New Year's Day parkrun going ahead either.
Forster parkrun attracted more than 150 people to its first-ever New Year's Day event on January 1, 2020.
Ms Woodhouse said the increase in visitors to the area around the holidays, along with the requirements of the COVID guidelines, meant that more volunteers were needed to administer a typical parkrun event.
However, she said a number of regular participants from the local area had indicated they were willing to put up their hands.
Ms Woodhouse confirmed Forster parkrun would announce its official return date when it had been decided.
"It's just a matter of whether it'll be this year or next year," she said.
