A 78-year-old man was among two people stabbed at a Hawks Nest property in an incident that has launched a broad police appeal.

Police said the man opened the door of his Booner Street home about 10.30pm last night when he was confronted by three unknown men.
The group pushed their way inside, assaulting the man and stabbing him in the abdomen.
Investigators have been told the group went upstairs and began assaulting a 53-year-old man who was subsequently stabbed in the back while attempting to flee.
The 53-year-old continued to run and was stabbed in the back and neck a further seven times, police said.
The home invaders took a purse and car keys from a 40-year-old woman before fleeing the property on foot.
Paramedics treated the 53-year-old before he was flown to the John Hunter Hospital in a stable condition.

The older man was also taken to hospital in a stable condition to receive treatment for a stab wound and head injuries.
Port Stephens-Hunter police is investigating and have established a crime scene.
