AWL spokesperson, Annette Heathwood, said the demand was unprecedented.
"This is a first for us, and one which we are pretty excited about," she said.
"Adoptions have gone through the roof."
Ms Heathwood said with many people now working from home, they obviously felt they had the time and energy to devote to integrating a new cat or dog into their households.
However, she advised against people making decisions on a whim.
"Pets are a long-term forever commitment," Ms Heathwood said.
"Think long and hard about it first."

Among the recent wave of new pet owners were Riley Cross and his mother Cathy, who adopted Harry the cat.
Ms Heathwood said Riley and Harry bonded from the moment they met.
She also said there were still pets available for those who wanted to adopt.
"If a fur-baby would be a good fit for your household, please give us a call on 0490 262 827," Ms Heathwood said.
"We have more kittens on the way and trust me, they are cute."
All AWL pets include vet work, vaccinations, desexing and microchipping.
