The Bureau of Meteorology warned yesterday that surf and swell conditions were expected to be hazardous for coastal activities such as rock fishing, boating, and swimming along our coast.
Australian Community Media photographer, Scott Calvin went in search of the predicted big waves.
He said the surf was deceptive.
He watched as a couple taking photographs at the end of the Forster Ocean Baths or the Bullring was dumped on by a large "set".
They were wet but okay.
A group of young people took the opportunity to have some fun in the surging water at the end of the baths.
The Bureau of Meteorology says the hazardous surf conditions are expected to ease tonight as ex-Tropical Cyclone Uesi, currently over the southern Tasman Sea, continues to move away towards New Zealand.
NSW Police Force, Marine Area Command advise that:
- People should consider staying out of the water and avoid walking near surf-exposed areas.
- Rock fishers should avoid coastal rock platforms exposed to the ocean and seek a safe location that is sheltered from the surf.
- Boaters planning to cross shallow water and ocean bars should consider changing or delaying their voyage.
- Boaters already on the water should carry the appropriate safety equipment and wear a lifejacket.
- Boaters should remember to log on with their local Marine Rescue radio base, via VHF Radio or the Marine Rescue APP, and consider their safety management plan.
