Smith, currently in India with the ODI squad, will miss Sydney Sixers' next two games but coach Greg Shipperd believes he will be on deck for next week's crunch clash in Brisbane.
The return of Smith, who captained Sixers to the inaugural BBL title, is yet to be rubber stamped by Cricket Australia (CA).
It remains possible that CA could force Smith to rest but, barring a niggle, he is fully expected to play in what shapes as a ratings bonanza for broadcasters.
Especially given he could be joining Sixers teammates Josh Hazlewood and Nathan Lyon in taking on Brisbane Heat superstars de Villiers, Chris Lynn and James Pattinson.
The gifted batsman, who spent part of his year in exile mentoring Josh Philippe and other Sixers, is keen to have a hit as soon as possible after Australia's one-day tour of India ends on Sunday.
"I think it'd be great if Cricket Australia would pay attention - of course they pay attention to their players - but take that into consideration," Shipperd told reporters.
"We're wanting them back out of India as soon as possible. Nothing's been confirmed there but we'd like to have Steve and Josh available.
"They'll be available.
"What a win for T20 cricket, the competition. The best couple up against de Villiers and co, that would be a great game if they could all be available."
The second-placed Sixers were outclassed by Melbourne Stars allrounder Marcus Stoinis last Sunday, when he crashed an unbeaten 147 to win the top-of-the-table showdown.
But the looming returns of Nathan Lyon, who is expected to play in Saturday night's derby, plus Smith and Hazlewood suggests the men in magenta will be genuine challengers for the title.
Sixers paceman Sean Abbott, who would have toured India with Smith and Hazlewood if not for a side strain, is tracking well in his recovery and could also return before the finals.
"He's running, shadow bowling and doing all the things. He's putting in an enormous amount of work in behind the scenes," Shipperd said.
"There's still four games to go before finals. That's another 10 days or so."
