British firm Land Rover saw its birth in 1947 as a rugged military and farm vehicle and a direct competitor for the American wartime star the Jeep.
The company has had a series of owners culminating with the Indian Company Tata, although the vehicles are still built in Coventry in the UK.
The Range Rover variant was conceived in 1970 and has evolved into a luxury SUV with strong off-road capability.
My test car was a Range Rover Sport SDV6 HSE, powered by a three-litre V6 diesel developing 225Kw (302bhp) and stump pulling 700Nm of torque at just 1500-1750rpm.
Drive is via an eight-speed auto.
It has a towing capability of 3,500kg.
This is a large SUV weighing in at over two tonnes, but acceleration is still brisk reaching 100km in just 7.1 seconds.
Fuel economy in my hands was 7.3L/100km (37mpg).

The Range Rover handles off-road conditions as easily as the daily commute, with a raft of electronics to make life easy for the driver.
They include gradient acceleration control, gradient release control, hill descent control, all terrain progress control, adaptive dynamics, terrain response with dynamic program, electronic active differential with torque vectoring by braking and electronic air suspension with dynamic response.
Safety is also heavily catered for with six airbags, high speed emergency braking, rear camera, lane departure warning and front and rear parking aid.
Options on the road test vehicle included blind spot assist, adaptive cruise control, driver condition monitor, lane keep assist, traffic sign recognition and adaptive speed limiter.
This is a super comfortable and luxurious SUV.
It's at home doing everyday duties on bitumen or exploring the rugged Aussie outback.
I had the Range Rover Sport SDV6 HSE for about six days and travelled 1,000km and thoroughly enjoyed my time with the car.
It accelerates smoothly, goes where pointed on corners and the brakes are very strong.
Porsche, Audi and BMW SUV buyers have a very viable alternate choice in the Range Rover Sport SDV6 HSE.
Pricing is RRP $136,700 plus ORC, as tested $144,410 plus ORC.
My rating 9/10.
